2010 Summer Study Tour to Turkey

Study Tour: The World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley again announces the opportunity to send four educators on a summer study tour to Turkey. Made possible through a generous grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the fellowship will allow six teachers to participate in a study tour to Turkey in the summer of 2010. (Exact dates haven't been set) The tour will include visits to historical sites, seminars, and meetings with Turkish educators. Selected applicants must attend a day-long professional development Workshop for Teachers on Turkey, hosted by the World Affairs Council, scheduled for Saturday, April 17th 2010 at Marist College at the Dyson Center, to incorporate their experiences into a Study Tour program in the fall. Preference will be given to teachers who can demonstrate their commitment to education about Turkey and who specify how they will use the study tour experience to enhance understanding about Turkey in their classrooms and school districts.

Cost: Each teacher will be asked to pay $600 toward the cost of the program and arrange for his/her travel to JFK or Newark Airport for transportation on Turkish Airlines. In addition to these expenses, teachers are advised by the Turkish Cultural Foundation to budget approx. $100 for tips to guides and drivers and approx. $25 for visa fees. All other expenses, including international airfare, hotels, local travel, and most meals will be covered by the Turkish Cultural Foundation. (A request for a single room will involve an additional charge).

Eligibility: Applicants must be currently employed full-time as a classroom humanities (history, literature, philosophy, classics and related disciplines) teacher or administrator in a 6-12 school in Dutchess, Ulster or Orange County and will be employed full-time as a classroom humanities teacher or administrator in a 6-12 school next year. Academic World Quest

Academic World Quest is a national high school competition created by the World Affairs Councils of America to help educate students about international affairs. Our Council’s Mid-Hudson Valley Academic WorldQuest engaged teams from local high schools in the regional competition. Our winning teams have enjoyed participating in the national competition in Washington, D.C. as our guests. We've been pleased to see excellent showings against teams from around the nation and world. Please see our Academic WorldQuest page for more information and team registration forms.

Global Scholar

The Council has helped to 3 students from the Mid-Hudson Region  participate in a 2 week-long seminar for high school juniors and seniors, held at Washington & Lee University during early July by sponsoring their applications and providing financial assistance to the students. The program offers students the chance to immerse themselves in college-level coursework on international relations and prepares them for the academic rigor of America's leading universities as well as develops leadership skills. The program's faculty includes prominent academics, government officials, and leaders of internationally oriented not-for-profits and think tanks.

Our 2007 scholar, AJ Reitter, presented the board with a PowerPoint presentation and a letter of thanks. His letter can be found HERE  and the presentation can be viewed by clicking HERE. (You will need either Microsoft PowerPoint or a Viewer installed to view this file. Search Microsoft's Downloads pages.)

AJ is an 11th grade student currently attending Roy C. Ketcham High School. He is involved in many extracurricular activities, including cantoring at his church, taking voice lessons, taking piano lessons, and he is involved in numerous afterschool clubs. Also, he takes many rigorous courses in school (6 A.P. classes). He had a wonderful experience with the Global Scholar program and encourages many people to either attend or become involved with the oustanding organization known as Americans for Informed Democracy.
