In 2016, Spakenkill High School team members, Courtney Noll, Neil Errickson, Jon Shwoerer, and Jacob Webster won the Regional Academic World Quest Competition, thus landing them a position at the National competition in Washington, D.C. to compete with the guidance of their coach, Jim Daley. Christopher Weida from the World Affairs Council accompanied the team and worked closely with the committee to secure all appropriate arrangements throughout the competition.
The competition was sponsored by the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley (WACMHV), and was held at the Henry A. Wallace Center in Hyde Park on Saturday, March 5, 2016. The World Affairs Council is a non-partisan forum for citizen participation in world affairs. Its mission is to raise public awareness of critical world issues
Second place in the competition was captured by the ‘A’ team from Washingtonville High School; and third place went to the ‘B’ team from Washingtonville. The ‘B’ team from Poughkeepsie Day School won the “Roosevelt Round,” which includes questions on Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency and his life.
In all, 15 teams and 60 students from the mid-Hudson region competed, including teams from Cornwall, Kingston High School, Oakwood Friends School, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Roy C. Ketcham High School.
Both IBM and the Handel Foundation have contributed to support the event. Sheila Appel, the US Regional Director, Corporate Citizenship at IBM, was the quizmaster for the competition. The Council also wishes to thank the Henry A. Wallace Center for their generous support.
